Compared to the private sector, an office pendant luminaire usually has significantly higher technical requirements in terms of:

Room situation:
Office pendant luminaires are a very good choice in rooms with very high ceilings. You have the option of hanging the luminaire long so that enough light reaches the desks
- The floating and suspended look gives the room a certain lightness
- Office pendant luminaires are less suitable for rooms with low ceilings. If they have to be suspended even further, they will be too low
- If there are already lighting installations in the room that can be used under certain circumstances, this should be checked in advance.
These could be, for example
- existing track for track spotlights or linear luminaires for 3-phase track
- existing grid ceilings can be used quickly and cost-effectively. Old louvre luminaires can be replaced with highly efficient LED panels at low cost. This can be done without major assembly work or complex installations.

Brightness:
Occupational health and safety guidelines require 500 lux at VDU workstations. Accordingly, an office lamp needs to have a corresponding level of performance. Not every product can achieve this. Light quality and ergonomics:
Anyone who spends many hours a day under office lighting will appreciate good light quality. An LED office pendant light should be able to reproduce good color rendering without distorted light with a green or blue cast. In normal everyday office life, a color rendering of CRI 80+ is usually sufficient.

Flicker-free light:
You should look out for power supply units without 50-heart flicker. The same applies to office lighting with glare-free light emission, which avoids annoying reflections on screens and monitors.

UGR value:
The glare value of UGR<19 should not be exceeded. This is also required by the Occupational Health and Safety Directive.

What light color for pendant office lighting?
In most cases, the 4000 Kelvin neutral white light color is used. The 4000K still has some red in the light and not too much blue. It is very pleasant to work with.
- For constructive work tasks with a lot of detail or for people who prefer a clear, cool light, a 5000 Kelvin shade or 6000 Kelvin shade is ideal
- Depending on the model, the light color can also be adjusted between 3000K - 4000K and 6000K. Changing the light color of the office pendant lamp makes it possible to stimulate the daily biorhythm and adapt to the brightness throughout the day.
- The light color is usually changed using a remote control, which also allows the office pendant lamp to be dimmed
Uniform illumination and ambient lighting
Pendant luminaires usually hang low above the desk. This means that the rest of the room may not have sufficient ambient brightness.
In addition to the required brightness of 500 lux at the VDU workstation, the room should be evenly illuminated. A constant change from light to dark and an adjustment of the eye causes rapid eye fatigue and loss of concentration.
The following aspects should be considered:
- Are there other ceiling lights in the room as basic lighting?

Long guarantee periods from the manufacturer:
Luminaires for commercial use should have the longest possible guarantee period from the manufacturer. Ideally at least 3-5 years. Then you also know that their products are designed accordingly. -

Dimming and dimmability of an office pendant luminaire
Dimming of office pendant luminaires is nowadays realised by DALI dimming using trailing edge dimming in small offices. However, not every product is suitable for dimming. Office pendant lamps with replaceable light sources cannot normally be dimmed.
However, if the light colour of an office pendant lamp can also be changed, the light can almost always be dimmed using a remote control.
Dimming the office lamps also saves additional electricity and extends the service life of the LED lights as they are operated at a lower power level.
Office furnishings and architecture
- Existing window areas can be used to utilise daylight. Desks should be positioned at right angles to the window in order to make optimum use of the light coming in from the side.
- Pendant office lighting should cover the shape of the desk wherever possible. An office pendant light with 120 cm or office pendant light 150 cm would be ideal
- Dark furniture and floor coverings absorb a lot of light, up to 20-25% of the required brightness. This must be taken into account when planning office lighting.
- Office furniture with shiny surfaces should be avoided as they reflect the light and can cause annoying glare
