Stairwell wall lights in many different designs
Stairwell wall luminaires are installed in large apartment blocks or blocks of flats to guarantee sufficient brightness for circulation routes and general lighting.
How high must the brightness be in the stairwell?
In addition to the legal requirements for brightness, stairwell lighting is also about a feeling of safety. The required brightness is 150 lux and is regulated in DIN EN 12464-1. For improved visual perception, we recommend that the stairwell wall lights achieve a LUX value of 200 lux or 220 lux.
Which switch should be used for a staircase wall light?
The staircase lighting is usually controlled with an on/off switch. A time is usually set there after which the light is switched off automatically.
Wall lights with motion detectors for a stairwell?
Wall lights with motion detectors are now also increasingly being used. These switch on at a set brightness threshold as soon as motion is detected by the motion detector. After a preset time, the stairwell lights are then switched off automatically as long as no further movement is detected.
Equip stairwell lighting with emergency lighting function / battery operation?
Emergency power or battery operation is often used in large building complexes. For this purpose, we offer stairwell wall lights with individual battery operation that automatically switch to battery operation in the event of a power failure.
Stairwell lighting with motion detectors switches on uncontrollably. What is the reason for this?
If the staircase lamp with motion detector switches on uncontrollably, it is due to the type of motion detector used. Microwave sensors detect movement through walls. If the tenant moves behind the wall in the detection area, the motion detector triggers and switches the lamp on. For this reason, lamps with PIR sensors are more suitable for use in stairwells.
What other requirements should be taken into account for stairwell lighting?
In addition to sufficient brightness, a light colour of 3500 Kelvin or higher should be selected in order to clearly outline and display contrasts, for example on dark steps. Light that is too spongy should be avoided.
- Stairwell wall luminaires should be installed in such a way that they do not cause glare. A UGR value of less than 24 is recommended.
- They should be mounted at a height that prevents the stairwell wall lights from being damaged quickly and still generate sufficient brightness
- Long guarantee periods from the manufacturer (at least 3 or 5 years) are an indication that the lamp in the stairwell has high-quality components and can be expected to have a long service life.
- A high level of robustness against external impacts such as knocks or blows is recommended. In this case, an impact class of IK8 or IK10 impact resistance ensures that a staircase wall light does not break immediately
- If a high level of perceived safety is to be created, we recommend stairwell lamps that are permanently lit with a basic lighting level of 25% and then provide full brightness when movement is detected
- Indoors, it is not absolutely necessary, but it is always helpful to use stairwell wall lights with IP44, IP54 or IP65 protection. This prevents dust or moisture from settling in the luminaire. Especially the ingress of insects.
Buying stairwell wall lights for replaceable light sources?
For many customers, a ceiling light / wall light with replaceable light sources is a prerequisite for reasons of sustainability. The idea is basically correct. LED light sources with an E27 socket are usually used for this purpose. However, the range of wall lights with replaceable light sources is limited and is becoming increasingly scarce.
When selecting stairwell wall lights or ceiling lights with replaceable light sources, the following should be taken into account
- Compared to ceiling lights with permanently installed light sources and power supply units, classic light sources usually have a shorter service life.
Accordingly, the light sources have to be changed more frequently and require more maintenance. This must be taken into account when making a selection. - In terms of efficiency, classic light sources are inferior to high-quality ceiling lights. This means that in direct comparison, higher power consumption must be expected in order to generate the same brightness.
- Poorer light image and uniformity of illumination. The replaceable light sources usually do not have such a uniform light pattern when illuminating the illuminated area. Permanently installed light sources usually have a very uniform and absolutely permeable light distribution.
- Lower switching resistance of light sources. Replaceable LED light sources usually do not have as high a switching resistance as special wall lights with power supply units. These are designed to support significantly more ON-OFF switching operations during their service life. As the light in stairwells is switched on and off very often. Switched on and off very often, replaceable LED light sources need to be changed more frequently.
