The Right Recessed Downlight for Every Ceiling Cutout
Whether retrofitting an existing building, a new build or a commercial refurbishment – ceiling openings rarely match a standard size exactly. The ED Series solves this problem: five models with different outer diameters cover virtually every aperture between 90 mm and 290 mm.
All models share the same light quality platform: Samsung® LEDs of the latest generation, a colour rendering index of CRI 92+ and a flicker content below 3 % for absolutely flicker-free, eye-friendly light – even during long operating hours of 12 to 14 hours per day.
Every model is available as a standard phase-cut dimming version (trailing-edge/Triac) and as a professional DALI 2 version. Further driver variants – such as on/off-only drivers or 0–10V dimming – are available on request.
When Is the ED Series the Right Choice?
- Large existing ceiling cutout that needs to look smaller → combine the larger housing with the smaller driver
- Retail, hospitality, showrooms → CRI 92+ shows products and food in their true colours
- Offices and workplaces → flicker-free light reduces eye fatigue and improves concentration
- Building automation / KNX / Smart Building → DALI 2 variant integrates seamlessly
- Continuous operation 12–14h per day → 50,000 h L90|B10 lifetime, extremely low failure rate
- IP44 protection class → suitable for bathrooms, covered outdoor areas and kitchens
What CRI 92 Means in a Retail Environment
Same goods, same light — yet a completely different shopping experience: the Ra value determines whether colours appear as they truly are, or flat and lifeless.

Why the ED Series? The 8 Key Advantages
CRI 92+ – Colours as They Truly Are
A CRI above 92 means food, textiles, artworks and skin tones appear natural and unaltered. Ideal for retail, hospitality and showrooms.
100% Flicker-Free (< 3% Flicker Content)
Imperceptible flickering strains eyes and the nervous system. The ED Series has a flicker content below 3 % – no headaches, no fatigue, even after hours of exposure.
Flexible Dimming Technology
Phase-cut dimming (trailing-edge) for straightforward installations – or DALI 2 with additional 0–10V and PUSH support for building automation and KNX systems.
Flexible Cutout Compatibility
The housing of a larger model can be paired with the driver of a smaller one – closing an oversized cutout optically without installing excess wattage.
50,000 h Lifetime – L90|B10
L90|B10 means: after 50,000 hours, 90 % of units still deliver at least 90 % of their original luminous flux. Perfect for continuous operation of 12–14 h/day.
ENEC + TÜV Certified Drivers
The DALI drivers carry ENEC and TÜV certifications – by no means a given in the market, and essential protection against failures caused by substandard driver electronics.
IP44 – Suitable for Wet Areas
Protection class IP44: splash-proof. For use in bathrooms, kitchens, covered outdoor areas and anywhere moisture protection is required.
Low Failure Rate, Consistent Production
The ED Series has been manufactured to a consistent standard for years – an extremely low failure rate in commercial use, even when mixing different cutout sizes within a single project.
Light Quality – Measured, Not Just Claimed
Every manufacturer prints CRI 90+ on the box. We show you the measurement data. The figures below come from a spectral analysis carried out with a professional measuring instrument directly on the luminaire.
What the Measurement Data Means
R9 (red saturation) is within the measurable range – particularly relevant for meat, flowers, skin tones and hair colours. TM-30 Rg 98 means colours appear vibrant and natural, not washed out.
CCT 2,933 K corresponds to a pleasant warm white – ideal for hospitality, wellness and residential spaces. The 4000K version (neutral white) is available for offices and showrooms.

Frequently Asked Questions about the ED Series
How do I measure the correct ceiling cutout for my recessed downlight?
Measure the inner diameter of the existing hole in the ceiling – this is the “cutout diameter” or “aperture”. The outer diameter of the downlight must be larger than the cutout so that the fitting does not fall through the ceiling.
Rule of thumb: outer diameter = cutout + at least 10–20 mm overlap. The following assignment applies to the ED Series:
| Cutout | Model | Outer Ø |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 mm | ED3KX | 110 mm |
| 110–135 mm | ED4KX | 140 mm |
| 150–175 mm | ED6KX | 180 mm |
| 200–235 mm | ED8KX | 245 mm |
| 250–290 mm | ED10K | 300 mm |
For very large existing openings (e.g. 180 mm) with modest light output requirements, the ED8KX housing (245 mm outer Ø) can be combined with a 15W driver from the ED6KX.
What is the difference between DALI dimming and phase-cut dimming (Triac)?
Phase-cut dimming (trailing-edge) sends the dimming signal over the 230V mains cable itself. You only need a compatible wall dimmer – no additional control cable. This is sufficient for most retrofit and residential projects.
DALI 2 is a digital bus system for building automation. Each luminaire has an individual address. Benefits: precise individual control, group formation, status feedback and scene storage. The DALI variant of the ED Series also supports 0–10V and PUSH dimming on the same driver.
Rule of thumb: simple offices, residential buildings, retrofits → phase-cut dimming. New builds with BMS, hotels, retail chains, smart building projects → DALI 2.
What does CRI 92 mean and why is it better than CRI 80?
The CRI (Colour Rendering Index / Ra value) indicates how naturally colours appear under a light source – compared to daylight (CRI 100). The higher the value, the more faithful the colour perception.
CRI 80 (standard LED): colours appear slightly distorted; reds can look dull. Adequate for warehouses or corridors.
CRI 92+ (ED Series): virtually identical to daylight. Food looks appetising, clothing shows true colours, skin tones appear healthy. An essential requirement for retail, hospitality, medical practices and workplaces with colour rendering requirements.
What does “flicker-free” mean and why does it matter?
Many LED luminaires flicker at 100–120 Hz – too fast to see consciously, but the brain registers it. The result: headaches, eye fatigue and reduced concentration with prolonged exposure.
The ED Series has a flicker content below 3 % – meeting the “flicker-free” classification per IEC standard. Even after 12–14 hours of operation per day, the light remains comfortable and easy on the eyes. Particularly important in offices, workshops, schools and anywhere people work for many hours under artificial light.
Can I combine a large housing with a smaller driver?
Yes – this is one of the ED Series' particular strengths. If, for example, you have an existing 200 mm ceiling cutout but only need 11W of output, you can:
- Use the ED8KX housing (245 mm outer Ø, covers 200 mm+)
- Combined with the 11W driver from the ED4KX
This closes the cutout cleanly without installing oversized wattage. We are happy to advise on possible combinations – send an enquiry.
Are the downlights suitable for continuous operation (12–14 hours per day)?
Yes. The ED Series was specifically designed for commercial continuous operation. Two factors are decisive:
Thermal management: The aluminium housing dissipates heat efficiently. Overheating – the most common cause of premature LED failure – is reliably prevented.
L90|B10 certification: After 50,000 operating hours, 90 % of units still deliver at least 90 % of their original luminous flux. At 13 h/day, this equates to approximately 10 years of operation.
The low failure rate in commercial use provides further evidence of suitability for intensive professional deployment.
Which colour temperature do you recommend – 3000K or 4000K?
Both colour temperatures are available in all models:
3000K (Warm White / 930): Cosy, relaxing. Recommended for hospitality, hotels, wellness, residential spaces and lounge areas in retail.
4000K (Neutral White / 940): Bright, crisp, concentration-enhancing. Recommended for offices, kitchens, medical facilities and display areas where colour accuracy is critical.
For mixed projects (e.g. a café with a service counter), both colour temperatures can be used in the same model range – the operator selects per zone.
What does the IP44 protection class mean and where can I install these downlights?
IP44 means: protection against solid objects of 1 mm and above (first digit: 4) and protection against water splashing from any direction (second digit: 4).
Permitted installation locations:
- Bathrooms – outside protection zones 0 and 1 (at least 60 cm from the water source)
- Kitchens and canteens
- Covered outdoor areas (canopies, carports, covered terraces)
- Commercial wet rooms and wellness areas
For fully wet environments (directly above a shower), we recommend IP65-rated luminaires.
