Where colour matters — in a fashion boutique, hairdressing salon, restaurant, bathroom or living room — the quality of light determines the result. The ED3KX 110mm ceiling spotlight delivers a measured colour rendering of CRI 94 (Ra > 90), well above what typical LED spotlights in this class offer: reds appear truly red, skin tones natural, wood warm — not grey or washed out as with many CRI-80 products.
With 8 watts of power and 700 lumens of luminous flux, the spotlight replaces a classic 40-watt incandescent bulb at one fifth of the energy consumption. The compact form factor — 110 mm outer diameter and just 36.5 mm installation depth — makes it the first choice for ceiling apertures between 90 and 100 mm, the most common cutout sizes in existing installations.

Both colour temperatures are premium variants with the "9xx" suffix (930 = 3000K with CRI 9x, 940 = 4000K with CRI 9x) — the industry standard for above-average colour rendering.

With the ED3KX 110mm ceiling spotlight from Cologne LED, the matching dimmable driver is always included in the delivery and already pre-wired. You do not pay extra for the driver.
Light quality: CRI 94 — measured with a spectrometer
CRI 80 vs. CRI 94 — the visible difference: In retail spaces, hairdressing salons and anywhere colour influences purchasing decisions or perception, CRI 94 makes a noticeable difference. Reds, oranges, skin tones and violets appear as they would in daylight — not washed out as with standard CRI-80 spotlights.
The CRI value (Colour Rendering Index, Ra) measures how naturally colours appear under a light source on a scale from 0 to 100. Ra > 90 is the minimum requirement of EN 12464-1 for retail spaces and workplaces with high colour rendering demands. We measured the ED3KX with a spectrometer — the result of CRI 94 and a CQS value of 94 is well above market level.

This LED ceiling spotlight is ideally suited to any application where excellent colour rendering of goods, food, skin tones or materials is essential. The warm white 3000K models in particular produce noticeably better light than many low-cost CRI-80 recessed spotlights.

The ED3KX emits light across a wide beam angle of 110°, providing uniform general illumination — without harsh hotspots or dark patches between spotlights. The luminous intensity distribution curve below shows the emission characteristics in polar form:

LED recessed spotlight for bathrooms and covered outdoor areas
With its IP44 protection rating and 90 mm aperture, this model is particularly well suited for use in damp areas such as bathrooms (outside protection zone 1, i.e. not directly above a shower or bath) as well as a ceiling spotlight under canopies, in entrance areas, covered car ports or changing rooms in sports facilities. The compact form factor with just 36.5 mm installation depth allows fitting even in shallow ceiling voids.

Rule of thumb: The aperture must be at least 10 mm smaller than the outer diameter. With a 105 mm aperture, check that the holes are cleanly cut before installation.

What does "CRI 92" actually mean compared to a budget CRI-80 standard LED? The ED3KX can also be dimmed via a home automation or smart home system with KNX — provided the dimmer actuator supports trailing-edge dimming. Proven actuators come from MDT or Gira, for example. Please contact us before purchasing for advice on the appropriate actuator for your KNX installation.
Important note on trailing-edge dimming: Please use only LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmers. Conventional dimmers for incandescent lamps (leading-edge/phase-cut) are not approved and can cause flickering, humming or damage. With trailing-edge dimming, the actual light output is physically slightly below the rated wattage — this is a characteristic of trailing-edge dimming technology and not a product defect.

What is the difference between CRI 94 and CRI 80, which is used in many standard LED spotlights?
The CRI value (Colour Rendering Index, Ra) indicates how naturally colours appear under a light source on a scale from 0 to 100. CRI 100 equals daylight.
CRI-80 LEDs are inexpensive commodity products suitable for corridors and storage rooms — but reds and skin tones appear grey or washed out. CRI 90+ is the minimum requirement of EN 12464-1 for retail spaces and workplaces. With CRI 94, the ED3KX sits firmly in the premium range — ideal for fashion, hairdressing, food, galleries and high-end living spaces.
We measure with a spectrometer and publish the genuine figures — no inflated datasheet claims.
Which ceiling apertures is the 110mm ceiling spotlight suitable for?
The ED3KX (110 mm outer diameter) fits ceiling apertures of 90 to 100 mm. Up to 105 mm is possible — provided the holes are cleanly cut.
Specifically covered: 90 mm, 95 mm, 100 mm. For larger apertures (110–135 mm), we recommend the larger model ED4KX 140mm from the same series.
With just 36.5 mm installation depth, the ED3KX is also suitable for shallow ceiling constructions.
Which dimmers work — and can I dim the spotlight via KNX?
The ED3KX dims reliably with trailing-edge wall dimmers from Merten (MEG5134-0000), Busch-Jäger (2250U, 6523U), Jung (224) and Gira (245000, 244000 S3000). Conventional leading-edge dimmers for incandescent lamps are not approved.
Via KNX, dimming works seamlessly — provided the dimmer actuator supports trailing-edge dimming. Actuators from MDT and Gira have proved reliable. Please contact us before purchasing — we will recommend the right actuator for your KNX installation.
Is the driver included in the delivery?
Yes — the 230 V driver is included in the delivery and already pre-wired. You can install and connect the spotlight immediately after unboxing (Plug & Dim).
The driver is secured in the ceiling void. Spring clips hold the luminaire body tool-free in the ceiling aperture.
Can I use the ceiling spotlight in a bathroom or outdoors?
Yes — with IP44, the ED3KX is approved for damp areas and covered outdoor use. Bathroom protection zones per DIN VDE 0100-701:
- Zone 0 (in water): not suitable — IP67+ required
- Zone 1 (directly above shower/bath): not suitable — IP65+ recommended
- Zone 2 and outside (from 60 cm away from the water jet): IP44 is sufficient ✓
Typical applications: bathroom (outside shower zone), canopy, entrance area, carport, sports facility changing rooms.
