Advantages of the flat LED recessed spotlight

Small flat recessed LED spotlights are very popular with customers because these flat LED downlights are flush with the ceiling. This creates a seamless visual effect and we list some other advantages in more detail in the following points:

  • The small, flat recessed lights are available in many different sizes. From a 110mm diameter LED downlight with 6 watts up to 300 mm outer diameter with approx. 20 watts output and approx. 2000 lumens brightness

  • The very low installation height of the flat recessed LED spotlights is particularly suitable for low suspended ceilings, without much space above and only with a very low installation height.

  • The flat LED downlights can also be offered in various dimming versions. For example, as a flat recessed luminaire dimmable for trailing edge dimming or for with DALI dimming

  • Another advantage of flat recessed LED spotlights is their very low price and affordability. However, there are also major differences in quality in the processing of flat recessed spotlights in this area

  • The smooth surface creates wide beam angles and surfaces are illuminated evenly and over a large area with 100° to approx. 120° beam angles.

  • Some models have an IP44 protection rating on the room side and can be used as LED recessed bathroom lights or as recessed spotlights for roofed outdoor areas.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of flat recessed LED spotlights

  • Compared to standard LED downlight ceiling spots, the flat LED recessed spotlights have a much lower efficiency of a maximum of 80-90 lumens per watt of power, while conventional ceiling spots achieve up to 140 lumens per watt.
  • Classic LED ceiling spots achieve a luminous flux of up to 4000 lumens and more, while the flat LED recessed spotlights achieve a maximum luminous flux of 2000 lumens.
  • Due to the flat and compact design, the specified lifetimes and guarantee periods of flat recessed LED spotlights are significantly shorter. Usually only approx. 20,000 hours of service life and a 2-year manufacturer's guarantee.
  • Especially with very long operating times of 10 hours and more, a loss of luminous flux becomes apparent relatively quickly. This means that the brightness decreases relatively quickly.
  • The wide beam angle is not suitable for use in offices at computer workstations. Here, glare-free luminaires that do not reflect are required.
  • Very cheap versions with inferior diffuser plates often show a yellowing effect on the light guide plate after just a few months due to the cheap Polystorol light guide plates used

All in all, the flat recessed LED spotlights have their place on the market. This is also shown by the high sales figures. These inexpensive versions are very adequate for many applications. However, the flat ceiling spots are not suitable for every application. We at Cologne-led.de will be happy to advise you specifically on your requirements.
